Propolis
If you already know about the wonderful virtues of propolis
from New Zealand, please go straight to our range of propolis
products.
As part of their immune system, trees produce a resin called
propolis that defends them against disease. Honey bees collect
this resin and mix it with their own secretions and beeswax
and use it in their hives for a variety of defensive and protective
purposes.
20 years of scientific and medical research has shown that
propolis has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal
properties. Over 180 compounds have been found in propolis
including phenolic compounds, bioflavonoids and esters of
caffeic acid an example of which is CAPE, the phenyl ethyl
ester. In comparison to amounts found elsewhere, pure New
Zealand propolis has been shown to contain twice as much bioflavonoids,
which have been shown to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory
effects. Esters of caffeic acid have also been linked with
anti-bacterial activity and stimulation of the immune system.
This makes propolis effective in the treatment of numerous
health conditions.
- Propolis is a natural antibiotic with no known side effects.
Unlike synthetic antibiotics, propolis is always effective
as bacteria as viruses are unable to build up a tolerance
to it.
- Chewing propolis produces a tingling sensation and a numbing
effect in the mouth and throat, indicating a local anaesthetic
activity, which is useful for treating sore throats. Studies
have shown that an a propolis tincture is a good as the
drug novocaine. In addition, propolis has been shown to
prevent the growth of micro-organisms in the oral cavity
making it effective for the use of dental hygiene.
- Russian scientists have shown that Propolis is useful
in the treatment of gastro-intestinal problems by preventing
ulcer and abscess formation and speeding up the healing
process.
- Chinese researchers found it effective in treating hypertension,
arteriosclerosis and coronary disease. Scientists discovered
that Propolis assists the white blood cells in engulfing
and digesting bacteria and other waste products in the blood.
- Research in America, Poland and Russia has shown that
acne, allergies, herpes and other dermatological disorders
have all responded to Propolis therapy.
- Propolis has become known as the “Woman’s
Friend”. It has been shown to be helpful with painful
periods as well as with vaginal infections and sores.
